 Happenings during Lent....

Personal and Group Lent Study Groups

The Parish we will be using a resource called “Live Lent: Let Your Light Shine” booklet from the Church of England.

This will help us answer two questions:

  • How can I receive God’s life more fully?
  • How can I live God’s life more generously, imaginatively and joyfully, in such a way that others can see it, hear it and take hold of it themselves?
  • There are two components to this, and you can participate in either or both, as you are able:

    * Read through St John’s gospel, in daily portions from Ash Wednesday to Easter Day, with the aid of a booklet containing a short reflection on each passage and an invitation to pray and to respond. These booklets are available at a cost of $8 (which is cost price with postage) If finances are an issue, please speak confidentially to Rector Julie.

    * Join a weekly Lent group, where there will be an opportunity to discuss the weekly themes of Change, Bread, Light, Life and Leaving. The Sunday sermons will also follow these themes.

    Groups will meet this year:

Monday evening, 7.00-9.00pm in the Shelly Beach Area, facilitated by Jean Pennells

  • Tuesday evening, 7.00-9.00pm in Caloundra, facilitated by Zeph Palmer

    Mark 1:1-11

    Isaiah 50:4-9

The book of the prophet Isaiah is really three books in one.  First-Isaiah is generally represented in Chapters 1-39.  He lived about 742-701 BC.  Second-Isaiah is generally represented in chapters 40-55.  He lived about 540BC and may have witnessed the destruction of Judea earlier in 587BC and consequent deportation into exile in Babylon. Third-Isaiah is generally represented in chapters 56-66.  He lived about 500BC, after the Jews had returned from exile and begun re-building Jerusalem. But disillusionment had set in.  This passage begins with a prophecy of the suffering that the Lord’s servant will undergo and concludes with a hopefulness that God will help and exonerate his servant.

    Psalm 31:9-18

    Philippians 2:5-11

Paul outlines how we can show our lives are being conformed to the life of Jesus. We strive to share 'The same mind' with Jesus and with those around us by sharing love, compassion, sympathy and joy. He further outlines how Christ offered us a model for life - one of obedience and self-sacrifice. Although Christ was in the form of God, he humbled himself and became obedient. It is the same kind of humble and obedient lives that we are called to, so that God can highly exalt us also.

    Mark 14:1-15:27
